Prof. Evgeny Ilyich Mayevsky, DM

Head of the Laboratory of Energetics of Biological Systems at the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Biophysics at the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Laureate of the Prize of the Government of the Russian Federation (1998).

Born in 1944 in the town of Velsk, Arkhangelsk Region. In 1961 he graduated with a Medal for Excellence from a Secondary School in the village of Sosva, Sverdlovsk Region. In 1967 E.Mayevsky graduated cum laude from the Medical Therapy & Prevention Faculty at the Sverdlovsk Medical Higher Institute (SMHI). In 1970 he completed his postgraduate studies in biochemistry, and until 1975 he worked as a teacher of biochemistry and physical & colloidal chemistry. At the same time, he worked as a medical doctor and lecturer at the “Znanie” Society.

In 1968, Mayevsky completed his training course at Moscow State University guided by A.F. Vinogradov and V.P. Skulachev, and in 1969 he completed another training and education course at the Institute of Biophysics at the USSR Academy of Sciences guided by Professor M.N. Kondrashova. In 1971 he successfully conducted his PhD Thesis Defense in biochemistry. Since 1975 he worked as a junior researcher at the laboratory of mathematical modeling at the Scientific Research Center of the USSR Academy of Sciences (now the Institute of Mathematical Problems of Biology at the Russian Academy of Sciences). Since 1979 he has been a senior researcher at the Laboratory of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics (headed by F.F. Beloyartsev), at the Institute of Biophysics at the USSR Academy of Sciences (now the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Biophysics at the Russian Academy of Sciences), where he worked as a senior researcher since 1991 at the Laboratory of Biophysical Acoustics (headed by A.P. Sarvazyan), and since 1994 he became the Head of the Laboratory of Thermodynamics and Energetics of Biological Systems (now Laboratory of Energetics of Biological Systems). Since 1995 till 2008 he was elected as Deputy Director for Research at the Research Institute.

In 1998 he successfully defended his Doctoral Dissertation in biochemistry, and in 2000 he was awarded the title of Professor.

At the laboratory guided by Professor F.F. Beloryatseva Prof.Mayevsky developed the formulation and manufacturing technology of emulsions of perfluoroorganic compounds as artificial gas-carrying blood substitutes and perfusion media demanded by disaster medicine and military field transfusiology, as well as a multifunctional therapeutic agent.

At the same time, a number of studies by Prof. E.Maevsky were devoted to the problems of adapting energy metabolism to acute and chronic hypoxia, including intense physical activity, the search for possibilities to improve the performance and accelerate recovery with the use of metabolite therapy.

In 2016, on the basis of ITEB RAS, he organized a new pilot plant for the development and production of nanoemulsions of perfluorocarbons for the medical and biological purposes.

The evidence data and findings of his research were often presented at All-Russian and International congresses and conferences as plenary and symposium reports, including international conferences and congresses in the USA, Germany, Japan, China, Sweden, Great Britain, Yugoslavia, Serbia, Mexico, Poland.

Prof. E.Mayevsky published the results of his research in more than 300 articles and 6 collective monographs. He has 44 patents and copyrights for inventions, including 8 international patents. More than 30% of the patents have been introduced into the practice of metabolite therapy, the manufacture and use of perfluorocarbon emulsions. More than 14 dissertations were defended under his supervision, including 5 doctoral ones.

For more than 35 years, Prof.E.Mayevsky has been actively teaching at universities of biomedical profile, at the Pushchino Governmental Natural Science Institute and at the Research & Education Center at the ITEB at RAS.

He worked as an expert for RUSNANO, at the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, and the Russian Academy of Sciences.

As a member of the R & D team developed the perfluorocarbon media, in 1998 he was awarded the RF Government Prize, and in 2001 Prof.E.Mayevsky was awarded with the National Science Recognition Prize.

In connection with the work on metabolic therapy in 2000, the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences awarded him the Medal named after I.I. Mechnikov "For Contribution to Strengthening the Health of the Nation".

In 2018, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation assigned E.I. Mayevsky the title of "Honorary Worker in Science and Technology".
